💔 Yesterday, tragedy struck our community as we witnessed a horrific shooting at Apalachee High School. As we mourn the loss of precious lives and extend our deepest sympathies to the grieving parents, it has become painfully clear that we must act to protect our children and answer their desperate pleas for help.
President Biden’s recent remarks about our children being in school should be learning to read and write, not duck and cover. Well-spoken words! Perhaps, it was not clear to you what has been said. But I heard his words clearly and precisely with heartfelt meaning. We should not be burying our children. It’s the other way around, our children should be burying us. However, the sentiment remains true—our children should be able to pursue their education without the constant threat of violence.
It breaks my heart to know that many parents have suffered such an unimaginable loss, enduring the pain of burying their children due to the senseless acts of another. Regardless of the nature, I’ll say it once more: “NO PARENT SHOULD EVER HAVE TO BURY THEIR CHILDREN.” As a community, we must come together, and unite with a common purpose: to create a safer world for our children.
One vital aspect we need to address is the accessibility of guns. We must find ways to keep these dangerous weapons securely locked away, and out of reach from our children. Will it take installing corrective action upon the parents to be responsible and held accountable for the actions of their children? Does it have to go that far? We need to explore and implement safer mechanisms to ensure the security of our schools and prevent future tragedies. This should be our top priority.
Moreover, we must focus on education and support for our children, especially those who cry out for help. Mental illness and grief are partners that wreak havoc on lives, and we must provide the necessary tools and resources to nurture young minds and offer assistance to those in need.
Implementing protective measures, like hall monitors and electronic sensors that can detect the presence of a weapon, can act as a first line of defense. However, it is equally important to address the root causes of violence in schools, such as bullying and the overall emotional well-being of our students. This is bigger than cancer, it’s bigger than HIV, and any other deadly killer.
Let us not turn a deaf ear to the cries of our children. We must listen, support, and work tirelessly to create an environment where they feel safe, loved, and heard. Together, we can bring about real change and ensure that no child or parent ever has to endure such heartbreaking loss again.
Our work is cut out for us, but I have faith in our collective ability to make a difference. Let us stand united in our determination to protect our children, nurture their potential, and build a better and safer world for them. Together, we can heal the wounds, mend shattered hearts, and bring hope back to our community. This is bigger than cancer; it’s bigger than HIV and bigger than any deadly killer!
